Paul Simon, Singing Homeward Bound, Doing Good Work and MH

“I’m more interested in what I discover than what I invent.” – Paul Simon

Simon and Garfunkel were different. They still are.  Some want to be different for its own sake, others are willing to be different because of something that moves them in a new direction.

“All lies and jests, still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.” – Paul Simon

The musical duo wrote and played songs that told stories, and made you think.

“You want to be a writer, don’t know how or when? Find a quiet place, use a humble pen.” – Paul Simon

MH is about home. We picked one of their songs with a refrain about home to share.  Here is a quote – most of these are from BrainyQuotes – to share and ponder.

“I lived in an attached house. My father used to drive into the wrong driveway all the time. He’d say, Damn it, how do you tell one of these houses from another?” – Paul Simon

Other than the numbers, couldn’t say the same about apartments too?

Some songs make you look at things in a new way.  Slogans can do that as well, years ago, when Arby’s had the tag line “Different is good,” it hit me that we had to apply that idea to manufactured homes – MH.  With MH, Different is Good. ©

“Artie is a singer, and I’m a writer and player and a singer. We didn’t work together on a creative level and prepare the songs. I did that.” – Paul Simon

“Facts can be turned into art if one is artful enough.” – Paul Simon

The facts about MH are so powerful, with numerous examples of amazing advantages, that my industry colleague, Ron Thomas Sr. famously said, “Manufactured Housing, it’s a phenomenon!”

“Homeward Bound, I wish I was, Homeward Bound…” – Paul Simon, lyrics from their hit song.

Seeing the Truth, about Home

As a younger man, I often wondered; how can I get more people to see the truth about manufactured homes?  How do we get past the stereotypes, or the things that were true about pre-HUD Code ‘mobile homes,’ but are now decades in the rear view mirror with today’s manufactured homes?

“Faith is an island in the setting sun, But proof is the bottom line for everyone.” – Paul Simon

Convincing someone ought to be a matter of revealing the truth.  Tours of a factory. Talking to the people like Mike Stone, the Sunshine Homes production manager who supervises the building of quality, appealing manufactured homes. Talking to home owners who know just how great their home is.

“Listen to the sound of silence.” – Paul Simon

The Alan Amy video interview includes some great interior videos of stunningly appealing and very affordable modern manufactured homes.  Alan advised, look, touch, see.

Louisiana retailer, Alan Amy told us to go inside. Look.  Touch.  See.  That requires no words, it requires observation!

“I think I have a superior brain and an inferior stature, if you really want to get brutal about it.” – Paul Simon

“If you can get humor and seriousness at the same time, you’ve created a special little thing, and that’s what I’m looking for, because if you get pompous, you lose everything.” – Paul Simon

I’ve personally owned and/or lived in about any kind of housing you can name.  I’ve owned 4 manufactured homes (MH), and two conventional houses in nice neighborhoods. Some of the happiest days of my life – like the birth of our son when all the experts told us he’d never make it – where days of wonder lived in a manufactured home.

There are millions of stories of people who are homeward bound to their MH, and millions more who long to be homeward bound. They need an MH, they just don’t may not know it, yet. My mission in life is to help millions experience that ‘Aha!’ Moment, that personal epiphany about MH.

Homeward bound,

I wish I was,

Homeward bound,

Home where my thought’s escaping,

Home where my music’s playing,

Home where my love lies waiting

Silently for me.

“There’s something about the sound of a train that’s very romantic and nostalgic and hopeful.” – Paul Simon

Doesn’t Paul Simon nail it with some of these thoughtful, interesting and playful quotes?

“Anybody can do bad work, but not everybody does good work.” – Paul Simon

In a factory, you get good work.  In a factory, it’s about team work.  But what if a team member is having a bad day? The rest of your team, your supervisor and that team at the next station are all there to ‘catch you,’ and keep you from stumbling.

There are even people from the MH Industry that think I’m just nuts, because they think so many people have never understood MH, why will they understand manufactured homes now? My reply is simple. The right timing is the answer.

For the first time for them, tens of millions need and want a home, and they just can’t afford what they think they want. But with MH, they can live the American Dream. They don’t have to be stuck renting, or in some other situation they really don’t like or can’t afford.

One report I saw the other day said there are 25 million millennials living in apartments.  There are another 6 million millennials who moved back or are still living with family.  That’s just one of several generations, waiting for their own home, or waiting to find a nice home to upsize, downsize or regroup in.

All we have to do is get people, one-at-a-time, to open their eyes, and see the truth about MH.

“I try to open up my heart as much as I can and keep a real keen eye out that I don’t get sentimental. I think we’re all afraid to reveal our hearts. It’s not at all in fashion.” – Paul Simon

And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories

And ev’ry stranger’s face I see reminds me that I long to be,

Homeward bound,

I wish I was,

Homeward bound,

Home where my thought’s escaping,

Home where my music’s playing,

Home where my love lies waiting

Silently for me.

There are times in our lives when everything looks the same, until we go home, to be with those whom we love.  We all long to be, homeward bound.

If you know someone – and odds are you know many – who ought to be, want to be, long to be homeward bound, please have them check this MHLivingNews.com website out. Tell them not to stop watching videos until they’re ready to go to a good retailer, builder/developer or community that feature today’s factory crafted homes. Have them look, touch, experience.

You and they, will be glad we shared these stories. More to come!! ##
